Location description

  'A few chains west of the present opening site' (Dalmer, 1970).

Description of option

  This pile-supported pipe culvert had a flap at the seaward end. The piles were 30 ft long at the seaward end but, approximately 8 years after it failed, Dobson commented that 50 ft piles would be necessary. The dimensions of the culvert are unknown.

  Allows continuous low discharge, attempts to keep lake at a constant (relatively low) level.

Maintenance/Management description

   It only operated for 7 months before the structure was damaged and undermined by heavy seas. Susceptible to scouring of piles.

  Construction cost = 7,200 pounds in 1904
